The History Of Agam Regency

Agam is a regency of West Sumatra, Indonesia.  It has a long and complete history, started in the middle of seventeenth century in which Minangkabau Kingdom came in to existence. At the time, the area of Minangkabau included beside of the whole Central  Sumatra, Limo Koto Kampar ( Bangkinang ), which at this time belong to Riau Province, Sungai Penuh ( kerinci ) now is  part of Jambi Province and some part of South Tapanuli  which at presents belongs to North Sumatra Province.The Ceremonial government involve three luhaks : Luhak Tanah Datar, Luhak Limo Puluh Koto and Luhak Agam.
In the colonial period, the status of the Luhak Agam was altered in to Afdeling Agam comprising of Onder Afdeling District Agam Tuo, Onder Afdeling Maninjau and Onder Afdeling Tiku.
At the beginning of Indonesian Independence, in August 1945, the former Afdeling Agam became Agam Regency, which consisted of three district : Agam Tuo, Manijau and Tiku.
The decree of Military Governor of Central Sumatra number 171 in 1949 shortens the area of agam regency, some Nagari at the surround of Bukittinggi municipality are put administratively into this city. This decree is strengthened by Law number 12 in 1956 about formation of regencies in Central Sumatra Province. Accordingly, this area becomes Agam regency.
At July 19th 1993, in fact the capital city of Agam regency is located in Lubuk Basung.
